Just two weeks ago, families, teachers, and students were leaving for vacation, expecting a relaxing week away from their jobs and schoolwork. That quickly changed following the news that students wouldn’t be returning to their schools and employees would be transitioning to virtual jobs. Some high school and college students are now realizing that as they complete coursework at home and social distance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Roughly four weeks ago, many Oxford residents left town headed for spring break. Now, students, professors and remote workers conduct class and business from their homes as COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Mississippi and the world. According to the latest statistics from the state health department, Mississippi now has a reported 1,915 COVID-19 cases and 59 deaths as of April 6. Former Mayor Pat Patterson runs University Sporting Goods on the Square, one Oxford business that is temporarily closed because of the impact of COVID-19. “We are in an absolutely uncharted territory right now,” said Patterson. “This has completely ruined business for the spring, and what I am deeply worried about is how it is going to affect the fall, and whether or not there will be Ole Miss games here, and so forth, to bring in more people for the businesses.” Read more at link in bio.
