Opinion: Try Orange Theory for a different workout approach

College can take a toll on every student’s overall health and well being. You’re not on a good sleep schedule. You’re staying up late studying, or going out with friends and lose track of time. You also do not eat as healthy as you normally do.

This is a constant cycle that every college student goes through, which leads to much stress. College is a major adjustment at first, but after being here for three years, I feel I have gotten the hang of it, and my overall health and wellness is good. I think it is all about balance and making time for exercise and healthier eating habits daily.

Every college student can do this. Whether it is going to bed earlier, drinking more water, or going on a walk with close friends, the possibilities are endless. There are small ways for you to get healthier daily. A good example is to park farther away in a parking lot, thus forcing you to walk more and get your steps in. Exercise and staying active helps your overall well being and happiness. This is why I try to put exercise at the top of my list daily.

The only exercise I did during my freshman year at Ole Miss was go on walks with friends. But, instead of exercising, we would always talk and socialize instead of focusing on our workout. As years passed, I have found a new workout that I love and feel excited to go to daily – Orange Theory.

The idea behind Orange Theory is heart rate monitor technology. For your 60 minute workout, you wear a heart monitor that tracks all of your progress. During the workout, the monitor tells you your heart rate, how many calories you’ve burned, and even splat points.

Splat points track how many times your have been in the Orange Zone. Once you have been in the Orange Zone for a minute or longer, you earn a point. The main goal is to get 12 splat points by the end of your workout. Once you’ve reached 12, you know you’ve pushed yourself hard enough and have accomplished the workout.

Heart rates are broken down into zones, with each color telling you how hard or not hard you are pushing yourself. The grey and blue zones are low, which then builds up to green, orange, and finally red. You know you are pushing yourself to the limit when your name on the screen reads red. You are accomplishing what you came to do.

Orange Theory has impacted my life so much and changed it for the better. I used to dread working out, because I didn’t have a routine or know what to do in the gym. But, with Orange Theory, since it is broken up into running and weights, I get an overall body workout I actually enjoy.

Another thing I love about Orange Theory is my heart rate monitor can track my workout outside of the Orange Theory Studio. Thus, I can track my runs and other weight type workouts with the same heart rate monitor I use at Orange Theory. So, I get the best of both worlds.

Many Oxford students participate in Orange Theory. Fellow Meek School student Julia Chism enjoys it. “It helps relieve stress from school, and it’s a good way to start my day off on a positive note.”

Orange Theory has made me stronger and have a better workout performance both in and out of the studio. Every student should give it a try, but everyone is different and should do what works for them.

I pair healthy eating with my workout routine. I try to eat healthy during the week and splurge on weekends. I think this creates balance. I also try to drink at least eight cups of water a day. If you are unable to join a gym, walking and running are amazing ways to get outside and soak up Vitamin D. This makes you happier and more upbeat to tackle your day.

I think health and wellness are important. When you are healthy from the inside, it influences how you are on the outside. This helps you perform better in school and have a better college experience.
