Batesville native Hope Jones said she has experienced only positive results since she and her husband began using CBD oil products about four months ago to help with pain and anxiety relief.

Jones began using the product to alleviate back pain and anxiety. Her husband began using it as a potential alternative medication for anxiety and pain.

“He has bone spurs on his neck, and some days, he would just hurt really bad,” Jones said. “The medication he was on really wasn’t helping, but with CBD oil, he will tell you he feels better than he ever has.”

Hemp Ville CBD opened its new retail location at 1801 Jackson Ave. Suite 103 A. in Oxford last week. Store owner Tony Barragan, who also owns Bim Bam Burgers & Wings, originally became interested in the health benefits of cannabidiol through a friend who used it to cope with a spinal injury. It proved to be an effective alternative to the highly addictive opioids she was prescribed.

“It’s the name of my brand HEMP – Help Educate More People,” he said. “That’s what I want to do.”

The goal of the business is to provide LOU residents with knowledge about safe potential alternatives to highly addictive pharmaceuticals. Hemp products are commonly associated with traditional tetrahydrocannabinol producing marijuana. THC causes the psychoactive effects that cannabis is known for.

“Marijuana gets you high naturally, because it has high levels of THC,” Barragan said. “Hemp, on the other hand, grows with a very low level of THC and doesn’t cause psychoactive effects.”

Opioids are often over-prescribed in Mississippi and greatly abused. Some believe CBD is a possible solution to many ailments historically combated with opioids and other pharmaceuticals. Some say they have had positive results, relieving symptoms of arthritis, seizures, depression, anxiety, and many other medical conditions. Others say they have not experienced benefits.

The products sold at Hemp Ville are sourced from companies, such as the East Tennessee Hemp Company LLC., located in Jonesboro, Tennessee.
The company runs a seed-to-sell operation, farming their own hemp and manufacturing their own products. This product is then sold to individuals in East Tennessee and retailers across the South.

“We grow our products using no heavy metals, germicides or pesticides,” said Corbin Bednarczyk, manager of East Tennessee Hemp Company. “If we do use chemicals like these, they will end up in our final product, and the product would not be able to go to market.”

East Tennessee Hemp Company owners pride themselves in using the best cultivation methods for their products to ensure safety and quality. Hemp Ville CBD strives to use only products proven safe and effective. Every shipment received from the distributor includes a certificate of analysis.

“We receive a COA with every new shipment,” Barragan said. “The COAs come from third-party testing facilities and check for traces of heavy metals and pesticides.”

There are many advocates for the product who boast of its natural healing properties. There are also are many skeptics who have tried CBD products in hopes of seeing improvements in their health, but saw no change.

Blaine Dunzweiler, who lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was persuaded by friends to try CBD oils to help combat knee pain from arthritis. Dunzweiler tried two different CBD products. Both were 1 oz. bottles sold at price points between $50-$100. The products didn’t seem to work and provided Dunzweiler with no sense of improvement.

“The first CBD product I used was an indigestible,” Dunzweiler said. “I took it as directed and saw no results. I even tried doubling the dose, yet I still saw no results. I then tried a different brand that my friends swore by. It cured every ailment that they had. They gave me some to try, but when I used it the results were still negative.”
