If you’ve ever wanted to explore your creative side, but weren’t sure where to start, you may want to visit the Clay Canvas in Oxford.

Owner Matt Allen’s store allows customers to paint canvases or sculpt their own pottery. Clay Canvas has been around since 2001, but in 2015, Allen purchased the store originally created as a paint-your-own pottery store. The potter wanted to open an arts supplies store.

“When I was in high school, all I did was draw and sleep,” said Allen.

Since then, he has turned art into a career. A normal workday for Allen is filled with glazing, firing, creating pottery and offering customer service. He supplies art materials to some local art teachers.

“We have some great customers,” he said.

Allen wants them to enjoy their experience at Clay Canvas, whether it is painting pottery, painting a canvas, or just shopping for a gift. Every person is welcome. Feel free to bring a friend, family member, or even a date. He wants everyone to leave the store feeling like they have created something unique.

Customer Paityn Johnson enjoyed her visit. “All the employees who work there are super nice and helpful,” she said.

Pottery is Allen’s favorite art form. He loves making jars, one of his signature pieces. “The most difficult thing about making jars is getting the tops to match the bottoms,” he said.

Allen also enjoys crafting vases with trees painted on them, another of his signature pieces. He said he has been inspired mostly by nature lately, and in Mississippi, you are surrounded by the beautiful outdoors.

When entering the store, you may get a warm welcome from the owner and his dog, Pepper. The store allows customers to paint their own pottery and canvases. There are several pieces of pottery to choose from, including everything from Ole Miss items to unicorns. Let your imagination run wild. There are no rules about expression.

Clay Canvas also hosts birthday parties. If your party paints 10 items, you will receive 10% off. And Allen offers pottery lessons at Clay Canvas. Call the store to set up an appointment.

On Tuesdays, when you bring a friend, if you buy one item, you can get a second item to paint for 15% off. Ole Miss students can purchase discounted art supplies. Show an employee your student ID at checkout, and you will receive 10% off your purchase.

Clay Canvas is open Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
