Not knowing a soul and having classes online may cause some to wonder how they can make friends or get involved with campus organizations in a safe way. These were my concerns when I moved to Oxford during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.
There are plenty of ways to get involved. Many organizations are accepting new members while still practicing safe protocols to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
I am lucky to be part of the creative team of Square Magazine, the student-run magazine here at Ole Miss. Being a member of the organization has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, meet new people, and express myself through creativity.
Square Magazine is a fairly new organization at Ole Miss. Formerly known as Velvet Magazine, Square Magazine is only in its second year as a brand. There are 40-50 members on the magazine staff that are separated by teams, such as editorial, business, social media, digital, and creative. Each team does different tasks to contribute to Square Magazine’s branding and content.
During the fall 2020 semester, the brand is focusing on digital content for its website. Since joining Square Magazine, I have became a photographer for the magazine. This has allowed me to learn a lot about editing. It has also given me the opportunity to improve my styling and directing skills.
