Join us on an exploration of this mysterious and captivating place, delving into the experience of being a prisoner within New York’s most untouched abandoned correctional facility.
The Prison’s Historical Background
Our focus is the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility, situated on Staten Island, erected in 1976 as a medium-security prison for male inmates, boasting a capacity of 931 beds. Initially intended for non-violent offenders like drug dealers, burglars, and fraudsters, the prison garnered a reputation for its relative peace and efficient management. Notable features included a substantial library, a gym, a chapel, and a vocational training center.
Despite its relative tranquility, the prison faced challenges and controversies. In 1996, an inmate riot erupted, resulting in arson, hostage-taking, and substantial damage. Though quelled by state police, using tear gas and rubber bullets, the incident left scars. In 2011, as part of cost-cutting measures, the state government closed the prison. Attempts to sell the facility proved futile, leaving it abandoned and neglected.
Exploring the Abandoned Prison
Having secured permission, we ventured into the prison through a breach in the fence, witnessing a surreal scene frozen in time. Personal belongings, official documents, and equipment lay untouched. From clothes, books, and magazines to records, reports, and memos, the prison seemed suspended in a bygone era. Graffiti and posters reflected the life and culture that once thrived.
Our exploration covered every nook, from cells to offices, cafeteria to infirmary, workshops to recreation areas. Emotions fluctuated between curiosity, sadness, awe, and fear. The walls seemed to harbor untold stories and secrets, and the objects whispered of memories and emotions. We sought to grasp the experience of living and working in this confined, controlled, isolated, and forgotten place.
